START WITH THE PROBLEM
Choose the concern first—not the appliance.
Oral appliances can serve very different purposes. Some support sleep-related breathing care, some protect teeth from grinding or impact, and others may be part of a jaw-function treatment plan. The diagnosis determines which pathway makes sense.
SLEEP APNEA
Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs)
For appropriately diagnosed adults with obstructive sleep apnea, mandibular advancement devices may be considered when they fit the medical and dental treatment plan.
SLEEP & AIRWAY
Sleep-Disordered Breathing
Snoring, disrupted sleep and other breathing concerns may need dental screening, medical diagnosis or coordinated airway-focused care.
BRUXISM
Teeth Grinding & Night Guards
A custom appliance can protect teeth from grinding-related wear, but the design should match the bite, symptoms and treatment goal.
RELATED SLEEP TREATMENT
Snoring Treatment / NightLase®
NightLase® is a laser-based treatment pathway for selected snoring concerns. It is related sleep care, not a removable oral appliance.
JAW FUNCTION
TMJ & Jaw Pain
Jaw pain, muscle symptoms and bite concerns may require a broader TMJ evaluation before deciding whether an appliance belongs in the plan.
TOOTH PROTECTION
Sports Mouthguards
Custom sports mouthguards help protect teeth and oral structures during athletic activity and are designed around the individual fit, dentition and sport.
CHILDREN’S SLEEP & AIRWAY
Pediatric Airway Health & Sleep Solutions
Concerned about your child’s snoring, persistent mouth breathing, restless sleep or jaw development? Learn how Bright Smiles evaluates pediatric airway concerns and considers age-appropriate options, including Vivos Guide, Way and PEx when clinically appropriate.
ORAL APPLIANCE OPTIONS
Different devices are designed for different clinical goals.
Bright Smiles provides multiple appliance families. The diagnosis, anatomy, bite, symptoms and treatment objective determine which device—if any—belongs in the plan.
SLEEP & AIRWAY
Vivos Appliances
Bright Smiles provides the Vivos appliance systems we use for appropriate sleep, airway and craniofacial treatment pathways, including DNA, mRNA, mmRNA, Guide, Way and PEx. CARE is the family that includes DNA, mRNA and mmRNA.
BRUXISM & PROTECTION
Night Guards & Occlusal Guards
Custom night guards and occlusal guards are used when the goal is to protect teeth and restorations from grinding or clenching forces. They are not interchangeable with sleep-apnea or TMJ appliances.
TMJ & NEUROMUSCULAR CARE
TMJ / Neuromuscular Orthotics
Reversible orthotics may be used as part of a TMJ or neuromuscular treatment plan after bite, muscle and jaw-function evaluation. These are different from generic protective night guards.
COORDINATED CARE
An appliance is sometimes only one part of the answer.
Sleep, jaw and tooth-wear concerns can overlap with medical, restorative or neuromuscular issues. We use the evaluation to decide whether an appliance is appropriate and whether another clinician or treatment pathway should be involved. Related therapies such as myofunctional therapy may also support selected airway, tongue-function or post-frenectomy treatment plans, but it is a therapy—not an oral appliance.
SLEEP MEDICINE
Medical diagnosis when sleep apnea is suspected
Dental screening can identify risk and symptoms, but obstructive sleep apnea requires medical diagnosis. Treatment planning may involve your physician or sleep specialist.
BITE & DENTAL HEALTH
Protect the teeth without ignoring the cause
Grinding-related wear, cracked teeth, missing teeth, bite changes or restorative needs may affect which appliance is appropriate and what else should be treated.
TMJ & RELATED CARE
Escalate care when the problem is more complex
Persistent pain, significant joint findings, neurologic symptoms or complex sleep concerns may require additional evaluation or coordinated specialty care.
An appliance is not the diagnosis. The goal is to identify the problem first, then use the simplest appropriate device—or another treatment—when it actually fits the clinical need.
HOW WE PLAN APPLIANCE CARE
Diagnose the concern. Match the device. Reassess the response.
The appliance should have a defined purpose, a fit that can be evaluated, and a follow-up plan.
EVALUATION
Confirm what the appliance is meant to address
We review symptoms, teeth, bite, jaw function and relevant medical history. Sleep-related concerns may also require medical diagnosis or records.
DEVICE SELECTION
Match the appliance to the treatment goal
The design depends on whether the goal is airway support, tooth protection, jaw-position management or another specific clinical purpose.
FOLLOW-UP
Check fit, comfort and response over time
Appliances may need adjustment as symptoms, dental work, wear or bite relationships change. Follow-up helps determine whether the plan is doing what it was intended to do.
INSURANCE & FINANCIAL PLANNING
Know the plan before treatment begins.
We accept your insurance and will help you maximize your benefits. Coverage varies by plan, diagnosis, appliance and treatment. Our team can review expected fees, available benefits and payment or financing options before treatment begins.
Treatment recommendations are based on clinical need, not on whether a particular appliance or service is covered.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions about oral appliances
These answers are general starting points. The diagnosis, appliance design and treatment goal determine what is appropriate for an individual patient.
Which oral appliances does Bright Smiles provide?
Bright Smiles provides mandibular advancement devices (MADs), Vivos DNA, mRNA, mmRNA, CARE and Guide appliances, custom night guards and occlusal guards, TMJ/neuromuscular orthotics, and custom sports mouthguards. The appropriate device depends on the diagnosis and treatment goal.
How do I know which appliance I need?
The device should be selected after evaluation. The same symptoms can have different causes, and a sleep appliance, night guard, TMJ appliance and sports mouthguard are designed for different goals.
Can Bright Smiles diagnose sleep apnea?
Dentists can screen for symptoms and oral or craniofacial findings associated with sleep-related breathing risk, but obstructive sleep apnea requires medical diagnosis. We can coordinate dental treatment with the appropriate medical care.
Is an oral appliance always an alternative to CPAP?
No. Whether oral-appliance therapy is appropriate depends on the sleep diagnosis, severity, anatomy, dental condition and the broader medical treatment plan. CPAP remains appropriate for many patients.
Can a night guard stop teeth grinding?
A night guard can protect teeth from direct grinding-related wear, but it does not automatically eliminate the underlying clenching or grinding behavior. Appliance design should reflect the bite, symptoms and treatment goal.
Is a TMJ appliance the same as a night guard?
Not necessarily. A protective night guard and an appliance used within a TMJ or neuromuscular treatment plan may have different designs and purposes. Evaluation should determine which approach is appropriate.
Is NightLase® an oral appliance?
No. NightLase® is a laser-based treatment pathway used for selected snoring concerns. It appears in this hub because it is related sleep care, but it is not a removable oral appliance.
How long does an oral appliance last?
Longevity varies with the material, appliance type, grinding forces, dental changes and how consistently it is worn and cared for. Fit and wear should be reassessed periodically and the device replaced when clinically appropriate.
