Digital scanning & treatment planningWhat is SureSmile®?
A clear aligner system that combines digital treatment-planning software with a series of removable aligners designed to move teeth in planned stages.
How often do aligners change?
The schedule depends on the treatment plan. Your Bright Smiles dentist will tell you when to move to the next aligner.
How much do I wear them?
Clear aligners are generally worn most of the day. SureSmile guidance supports near-full-time wear, often up to about 22 hours a day; follow the exact instructions for your case.
Is SureSmile right for everyone?
No. Some movements are well suited to aligners; others may be better managed with braces, auxiliaries, a hybrid plan or a different aligner platform.
A CLEAR ALIGNER SYSTEM — NOT A ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL ANSWER
What makes SureSmile® different?
SureSmile is a digital orthodontic platform from Dentsply Sirona. The system combines digital records, treatment-planning software and manufactured clear aligners in one workflow. The dentist can review the proposed tooth movements, staging, attachments and other treatment details before approving the case.
That matters because the clear tray is only the appliance. The quality of treatment still depends on diagnosis, realistic tooth movement, bite goals, periodontal health, monitoring and patient wear.
Bright Smiles keeps multiple orthodontic tools available. SureSmile may be a strong choice for one patient, while Lumyra, Invisalign®, ClearCorrect®, braces or another approach may be more appropriate for another.
DIGITAL PLANNING WITH CLINICAL OVERSIGHT
Why we may choose SureSmile® for a case
The value of SureSmile is not simply that the trays are clear. It is the combination of a removable appliance with a digital planning workflow that can be reviewed and directed by the treating dentist.
Digital treatment planning
The treatment is planned digitally so tooth positions, staging and treatment goals can be reviewed before the aligners are approved.
Clinician control
The workflow gives the treating dentist tools to review the setup and request changes when the proposed movement does not match the clinical plan.
Records brought together
Digital scans and the records needed for diagnosis help the tooth and bite relationship be planned in three dimensions.
Removable appliance
Aligners can be removed for eating and oral hygiene, but treatment depends on wearing them consistently for the prescribed schedule.
The aligner brand matters less than the diagnosis, mechanics, monitoring and fit of the treatment plan to the patient.
WHAT THE PROCESS LOOKS LIKE
From digital records to retainers
Your exact sequence can vary, but well-managed aligner treatment follows a deliberate diagnostic and monitoring process rather than simply handing out a stack of trays.
01
Evaluation & goals
We examine the teeth, bite, gums and existing dental work, review what you want to change and determine whether aligners are an appropriate treatment category.
02
Digital records
Digital scans and the records needed for diagnosis are obtained so the teeth and bite can be planned in three dimensions.
03
Treatment setup
A digital setup is created. The dentist reviews the sequence, tooth positions, attachments, IPR or other planned auxiliaries and makes changes when needed.
04
Aligner delivery
Once the plan is approved and aligners are manufactured, you receive the first sets along with instructions for wear, insertion, removal, cleaning and storage.
05
Progress checks
We monitor fit, tracking, hygiene and tooth movement. If the teeth are not following the plan, treatment may need adjustment or additional records.
06
Retention
After active movement is complete, retainers are used to help maintain the result. Retention is part of orthodontic treatment, not an optional afterthought.
CANDIDACY
What can SureSmile® clear aligners treat?
SureSmile is designed for orthodontic tooth movement, but no aligner system is appropriate for every malocclusion. The right question is whether the movements needed in your case can be expressed predictably and safely with an aligner-based plan.
Crowding & rotations
Selected crowding and rotated teeth can often be treated with clear aligners when the movements are realistic and there is adequate space or a planned way to create it.
Spacing
Aligners can close many spaces, but the cause of the spacing, tooth proportions and the final bite influence how the plan is designed.
Bite correction
Some overbite, crossbite, open-bite and front-to-back bite problems can be managed with aligners, sometimes with attachments, elastics or other auxiliaries.
Relapse after prior treatment
Aligners can be useful when teeth have shifted after previous orthodontic treatment, provided the current tooth and gum health supports movement.
Complex movement
Difficult root movement, major skeletal discrepancies, significant growth issues or other complex mechanics may be better handled with braces, a hybrid plan or specialty referral.
Restorative coordination
Crowns, implants, worn teeth and cosmetic plans can change the orthodontic sequence. Sometimes tooth movement is planned specifically to make future restorative dentistry easier or more conservative.
CHOOSING THE APPLIANCE
SureSmile®, Lumyra, Invisalign® and ClearCorrect®
Bright Smiles intentionally keeps more than one clear-aligner platform available. The decision is based on the clinical plan, the tools we want for the case and patient preferences — not on a claim that one brand is universally best.
SureSmile®
Digital clear-aligner platform with clinician-directed treatment-planning tools. We can use it when its workflow and treatment-planning features fit the case.
Lumyra
Bright Smiles’ current go-to direct-printed clear aligner system, using a different manufacturing approach and shape-memory aligner technology.
Invisalign®
A widely recognized aligner system with an established digital workflow, attachments and broad treatment ecosystem.
ClearCorrect®
Another established clear-aligner option with its own workflow, materials and treatment-planning features.
LIVING WITH CLEAR ALIGNERS
The treatment works between appointments
The digital plan matters, but so does what happens every day. Consistent wear, good oral hygiene and keeping follow-up visits are essential parts of aligner treatment.
Wear consistently
Aligners only move teeth while they are being worn. Follow the prescribed daily wear schedule and change interval rather than advancing trays early on your own.
Remove for meals
Unless your dentist gives different instructions, remove aligners for eating and for drinks other than cool water, then clean your teeth before reinserting them when practical.
Keep them clean
Rinse and clean aligners as directed. Avoid hot water, which can distort some aligner materials, and store trays in their case when they are out of your mouth.
Expect auxiliaries when needed
Attachments, elastics, IPR or other auxiliaries may be part of a clear-aligner plan. They are used to help create movements that a smooth tray alone may not express well.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
SureSmile® questions, answered clearly
What is SureSmile®?
SureSmile® is a clear-aligner system from Dentsply Sirona that combines digital treatment-planning software with a series of removable aligners manufactured to carry out the approved movement plan.
Is SureSmile® the same as Invisalign®?
No. Both are clear-aligner systems, but they use different software workflows, materials and manufacturing processes. Bright Smiles can use multiple aligner systems and chooses among them based on the treatment plan and patient needs.
How many hours a day do I need to wear SureSmile® aligners?
SureSmile guidance supports near-full-time wear, often up to about 22 hours a day. Your Bright Smiles dentist will give you the exact schedule for your case.
How often do I change to the next aligner?
The change interval is prescribed for your case. Do not move to the next tray simply because a certain number of days has passed unless that matches your instructions.
Will I need attachments?
Possibly. Tooth-colored attachments can help the aligner grip a tooth or express a specific movement. Their number, shape and location depend on the mechanics of the treatment plan.
Can I eat while wearing SureSmile® aligners?
In general, aligners are removed for meals unless your dentist gives different instructions. Follow the handling and cleaning directions provided for your treatment.
Can SureSmile® treat overbites, crossbites or open bites?
Some bite problems can be treated with clear aligners, sometimes with attachments, elastics or other auxiliaries. Whether SureSmile is appropriate depends on the type and severity of the bite problem, growth, roots, bone and the movements required.
Can teenagers use SureSmile®?
Clear aligners can be appropriate for many teens. The decision depends on dental development, the orthodontic problem, oral hygiene and whether the aligners can be worn consistently.
What happens if my teeth do not track the plan?
We evaluate aligner fit and tooth movement during progress checks. If the teeth are not following the plan, treatment may need an adjustment, additional records, a refinement sequence or a change in mechanics.
Will I need retainers after SureSmile®?
Yes. Teeth can move after active orthodontic treatment. Retention is part of maintaining the result, and we will review the type and wear schedule when active treatment is complete.
Does insurance help with SureSmile® clear aligners?
We accept your insurance and will help you maximize your benefits. Orthodontic benefits vary by plan, age and treatment. The final amount paid is determined by your plan.
What if SureSmile® is not the best option for me?
We will explain the alternatives. Another clear-aligner platform, braces, a hybrid approach or referral for a more complex orthodontic problem may provide better control. The goal is a healthy, stable result — not forcing every case into one appliance.
