TREATMENT & AFTERCARE

Braces Aftercare Instructions

Manage normal adjustment soreness, protect brackets and wires, and keep teeth and gums exceptionally clean throughout orthodontic treatment.

Braces apply controlled forces to move teeth. Pressure or tenderness is common after placement and adjustments, but broken appliances, poor plaque control, and certain foods can interrupt treatment or damage teeth and gums.

Your personal instructions come first. Follow the instructions your Bright Smiles dentist or clinical team gave you for your exact procedure, medications, materials, appliance or restoration, and follow-up schedule. Those directions take priority over general guidance on this page.

Your First 24 Hours

Expect pressureTeeth can feel sore or tender after braces are placed or adjusted. This usually improves over several days.
Use orthodontic waxDry the irritating bracket or wire and cover it with orthodontic wax when needed for temporary comfort.
Choose softer foodsUse softer foods while teeth are tender and cut firm foods into small pieces rather than biting them with the front teeth.
Avoid damaging foodsAvoid hard, sticky, and very chewy foods that can bend wires or loosen brackets.
Brush carefullyBrush around brackets, along the gumline, and between teeth after meals when practical; clean between teeth every day.
Wear auxiliaries as directedUse elastics or other prescribed components exactly as instructed; inconsistent wear can delay treatment.

AFTERCARE VIDEO

Aftercare Guidance From Our Clinical Team

A Bright Smiles doctor or clinical team member walks you through the most important aftercare instructions and what to expect after braces.

Soreness After Placement or Adjustment

Pressure and tooth tenderness are common for the first few days after braces are placed or adjusted. Choose softer foods while chewing is uncomfortable. Warm salt-water rinses can soothe irritated tissues, and orthodontic wax can protect a cheek or lip that is rubbing against a bracket.

If you need a pain reliever, use one that is safe for you and follow the product label or your clinician's instructions. Severe pain, facial swelling, fever, dental trauma, or pain that keeps worsening is not something to simply wait out as normal braces soreness.

Foods & Habits That Can Damage Braces

Avoid hard, sticky, and very chewy foods that can loosen brackets or bend wires. Common troublemakers include ice, hard candy, caramel or taffy, popcorn kernels, hard nuts, and very crunchy foods. Cut firm fruits, vegetables, crusty bread, and meat into bite-size pieces instead of biting into them with the front teeth.

Do not chew pens, pencils, fingernails, or other objects. If something breaks, save any loose piece you can safely retrieve and contact Bright Smiles rather than waiting for the next routine visit.

Brushing, Flossing & Fluoride

Braces create extra places for plaque and food to collect. Brush carefully along the gumline and above, below, and around every bracket with fluoride toothpaste. Clean between every tooth daily using floss with a threader, an interdental brush, a water flosser, or another method your team has shown you.

Look closely for plaque around brackets. Persistent plaque can lead to cavities, swollen gums, and permanent white marks on the enamel. Orthodontic visits do not replace regular dental examinations and professional cleanings.

Poking Wires, Loose Brackets & Broken Parts

For a mildly poking wire, gently cover the irritating area with orthodontic wax. If your team has shown you how, a clean cotton swab or pencil eraser may sometimes be used to nudge a wire away from the cheek. Do not pull on the wire or repeatedly bend it.

If a bracket is loose but still attached to the wire, leave it in place and use wax for comfort if needed. Call Bright Smiles promptly about a loose bracket, band, wire, spring, expander, or other appliance part so we can decide whether it needs an earlier visit.

Rubber Bands & Other Appliances

Wear rubber bands, springs, expanders, or other prescribed components exactly as directed. The amount and direction of force are part of your treatment plan. Do not double rubber bands, change their position, or try to make up missed wear by using extra force.

If you run out of supplies, an appliance stops fitting, or you are unsure where a rubber band belongs, contact us rather than guessing. Consistent prescribed wear helps treatment stay on schedule.

Sports & Dental Injuries

You can remain active during orthodontic treatment. Use an orthodontic-compatible mouthguard for sports with a risk of contact or impact. If you are hit in the mouth, check for loose or displaced teeth as well as damaged braces.

A knocked-out or badly displaced permanent tooth, suspected jaw injury, uncontrolled bleeding, or trouble breathing or swallowing needs urgent dental or medical care. Once you are safe, contact Bright Smiles so the braces can also be checked.

Appointments & Keeping Treatment on Track

Keep scheduled adjustment and monitoring visits. Broken appliances, missed appointments, poor rubber-band wear, and repeated damage can slow tooth movement or extend treatment.

Call when something breaks instead of waiting automatically for the next appointment. We can tell you whether the problem can safely wait, whether a temporary comfort measure is appropriate, or whether we should see you sooner.

Protecting Your Teeth & Gums During Treatment

Healthy gums and cavity-free teeth are essential throughout orthodontic treatment. Continue routine dental examinations and cleanings at the interval recommended for you. Tell us if your gums remain swollen or bleed heavily despite good cleaning, or if you notice a cavity, broken tooth, persistent bad taste, or new tooth pain.

At the end of active treatment, retention is necessary to help hold the teeth in their new positions. Follow the retainer instructions you receive when your braces are removed.

RECOVERY AT A GLANCE

Braces Care Timeline

Next Few DaysSoreness should ease. Continue meticulous brushing and interdental cleaning and protect brackets from hard or sticky foods.
Between VisitsWear prescribed elastics or auxiliaries consistently and report breakage rather than waiting if the appliance is not functioning.
Throughout TreatmentKeep orthodontic and routine dental visits and maintain excellent plaque control to protect enamel and gums.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Braces FAQs

How long do braces hurt after an adjustment?

Pressure or tenderness commonly lasts several days and should improve. Severe or worsening pain, swelling, or pain from a damaged appliance should be evaluated.

What should I do about a poking wire?

Orthodontic wax can protect the cheek or lip temporarily. Contact Bright Smiles if the wire remains painful, is significantly displaced, or you cannot make it comfortable.

What foods should I avoid with braces?

Avoid foods that are hard, sticky, or likely to bend wires or loosen brackets. Cut firm foods into small pieces instead of biting directly into them.

How do I floss with braces?

Use the method demonstrated by your team, such as a floss threader, orthodontic flosser, interdental brush, or water flosser. Cleaning between teeth every day remains important.

What if a bracket comes loose?

Contact Bright Smiles. If it remains attached to the wire, leave it in place unless instructed otherwise and use wax if it irritates the cheek or lip.

Do orthodontic visits replace regular dental cleanings?

No. Continue routine dental examinations and preventive care because braces increase plaque-retention areas and orthodontic visits focus on tooth movement and appliance management.

When Should I Call Bright Smiles?

Call for a loose bracket or band; broken or displaced wire; appliance part that is swallowed or possibly inhaled; wire that cannot be made comfortable; significant mouth sores; severe or worsening pain; facial swelling; dental trauma; or a tooth that becomes unusually mobile or displaced. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, suspected aspiration, severe facial trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, or a serious allergic reaction.

Call sooner whenever something feels substantially different from the recovery or treatment course your clinician described.

Get emergency medical help

Difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly expanding swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, a serious medication reaction, or another potentially life-threatening symptom requires emergency medical attention. Call 911 or seek emergency care.
