TREATMENT & AFTERCARE

Crowns & Bridges Aftercare Instructions

Avoid sticky and very hard foods on a temporary restoration.

These instructions cover the essential home care, expected changes, warning signs, and follow-up for crowns & bridges. Your Bright Smiles clinician's instructions for your specific treatment, medicines, appliance, and medical history take priority.

Your personal instructions come first. Follow the instructions your Bright Smiles dentist or clinical team gave you for your specific treatment, medications, appliance, restoration, and follow-up schedule. Those directions take priority over general guidance on this page.

AFTERCARE VIDEO

Aftercare Guidance From Our Clinical Team

A Bright Smiles doctor or clinical team member reviews the most important instructions and what to expect after crowns & bridges.

If You Have a Temporary Crown or Bridge

Avoid sticky and very hard foods on a temporary restoration. Chew on the other side when practical. Floss carefully as instructed so you do not pull the temporary off; your team may ask you to slide floss out through the side rather than lifting it back through the contact.

Your individual treatment can differ in extent, materials, medicines, and healing needs. Follow any specific instructions Bright Smiles gave you for crowns & bridges, and contact us rather than guessing if your experience is substantially different from what is described here.

If a Temporary Comes Off

Call Bright Smiles promptly if a temporary crown or bridge loosens or comes off. Save it and bring it with you. Do not use household glue. A tooth under a temporary can become sensitive and can shift, which may affect the fit of the final restoration.

After the Final Crown or Bridge

The final restoration may feel different at first, but your bite should become comfortable. Call if it feels high, chewing is painful, or the bite feels uneven after numbness is gone. Early adjustment can prevent unnecessary stress.

Keep the review schedule Bright Smiles gives you. Follow-up for crowns & bridges is used to check healing or tissue health, function and bite, home-care access, and the condition of any restoration or appliance; the interval may change with your individual risk and findings.

Sensitivity & Gum Tenderness

Mild gum tenderness or temporary temperature sensitivity can occur. Severe, spontaneous, throbbing, or worsening pain; swelling; or pain that wakes you from sleep should be evaluated because a crowned tooth can still develop nerve or other dental problems.

The overall trend matters: expected early symptoms should remain manageable and then improve. Pain or swelling that becomes substantially worse after beginning to improve, new drainage or a foul taste, fever, or symptoms that interfere with normal swallowing or breathing need prompt evaluation.

Cleaning Crowns & Bridges

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. Clean between crowns normally and clean beneath fixed bridge replacement teeth every day using floss threaders, interdental brushes, a water flosser, or the method shown by your team.

Use only the cleaning method that fits your crowns & bridges and its stage of healing. If an area cannot be cleaned without pain, bleeding, forcing a device, or disturbing healing tissue, stop and ask Bright Smiles to demonstrate the safest technique rather than improvising.

Protecting the Restoration

Avoid ice, hard candy, and using teeth as tools. If you grind or clench, wear a protective appliance if prescribed. Call for a chip, crack, loose crown or bridge, recurrent food trapping, or a sudden bite change.

Avoid smoking, vaping, nicotine, and damaging oral habits whenever they can interfere with healing or increase mechanical risk. If you clench, grind, play contact sports, or have another activity that affects the treated area, follow the protection plan your clinician recommended.

Long-Term Care

Crowns and bridges cover or replace teeth but do not make the supporting teeth immune to decay or gum disease. Keep regular examinations and cleanings so margins, supporting teeth, gums, and bite can be monitored.

Personal Instructions, Follow-Up & Changes in Your Plan

Keep every follow-up visit Bright Smiles recommended for crowns & bridges. Healing, fit, symptoms, and treatment needs can change over time, and the next step should be based on an examination rather than the calendar alone. If your clinician gave you instructions that differ from this general page because of your procedure, medical history, medication, restoration, or appliance, follow those personalized directions and contact us if anything is unclear.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Crowns & Bridges FAQs

How long should I avoid chewing after a crown or bridge is placed?

Follow the instructions for whether you have a temporary or final restoration. Wait for numbness to wear off, and avoid foods that could pull off or fracture a temporary restoration.

What if my temporary crown or bridge comes off?

Keep the restoration if you can retrieve it safely and contact Bright Smiles. Do not use household glue; the tooth may need protection and the temporary may need to be recemented or replaced.

Is sensitivity normal after a crown?

Some temperature or pressure sensitivity can occur, especially when the tooth was recently prepared. Severe, spontaneous, nighttime, lingering, or worsening pain should be evaluated.

How do I floss under a bridge?

A bridge requires cleaning beneath the replacement tooth as well as around the supporting teeth. Use the floss threader, interdental brush, or other method demonstrated for your bridge design.

What if the new crown feels high when I bite?

Once numbness is gone, your bite should feel balanced. If the crown hits first or chewing causes focused pain, call for a bite check rather than waiting for it to wear down.

Can a crowned tooth still get a cavity?

Yes. The crown itself does not decay, but natural tooth structure at its edge can. Fluoride toothpaste, daily cleaning, diet control, and regular examinations help protect the supporting tooth.
