What Is Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication in pill form to help relax you before and during your dental procedure. Oral sedation is different than using nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or intravenous (IV) sedation in that it is a prescribed pill taken before the appointment. The oral sedation pill is a medication in the benzodiazepines drug family. Benzodiazepines affect the central nervous system (CNS), and in the case of utilizing oral sedation, benzodiazepines help the individual to feel an extremely relaxed state.
The patient will remain conscious during the dental procedure however the effects of the sedative to help lessen fear, anxiety, or discomfort. Oral sedation can range in doses; light to moderate, however, in all doses the patient will feel calmness, comfort, and relaxedness during the procedure while still being able to respond to the dentist’s requests.
