Bright Smiles Dentistry & Orthodontics Kid's Fluoride Treatment

When it comes to children keeping their teeth healthy, our first priority is maintaining a prevention program for cavities. While oral hygiene and diet are important risk factors regarding tooth decay, a pretty effective method to prevent cavities is with fluoride treatment. Fluoride is mineral found naturally and it actually works by remineralizing the enamel of the tooth and helping to prevent decay. Bright Smiles Dentistry & Orthodontics describes fluoride treatments as an approach, along with oral hygiene, to preventative care for your children, to keep your child’s teeth healthy and cavity deciduous between visits.

What is Fluoride and How Does It Work?

Fluoride is effective at rebuilding our enamel on our teeth; the hard, outer layer of our teeth that helps protect the tooth from decay. Fluoride works by remineralizing our weakened enamel; and can also strengthen the enamel and therefore halt the damage originally caused by the acids produced by the bacteria in our mouths. It can also, in some cases, reverse the early changes of decay, and prevent cavities.

Fluoride occurs naturally in many aspects of life (drinking water, toothpastes, and certain food), but the fluoride treatments we are able to do in the office helps to give that extra layer of protection against cavities, particularly with younger children, who may be more prone to rabbits.

Why Fluoride Treatment is Important for Children

Children’s teeth are still developing and as a result they are more susceptible to cavities. Fluoride treatments provided to children provide us wonderful benefits of strengthening teeth and preventing decay during their developing years.

Here are some good reasons to get fluoride treatments for children:

Prevent Cavities:

Fluoride can help prevent cavities by strengthening enamel which makes it stronger and more resistant to the acids found in plaque and sugars.

Remineralization:

If your child’s enamel has started to soften, fluoride will help remineralize and strengthen the enamel PRIOR to cavities forming.

Protection Against Early Decay:

Fluoride treatments can help protect your child against early tooth decay, before the decayed teeth require a filling, crown or other treatment.

Good Oral Health for Life:

Fluoride treatments also help children prevent cavities while their teeth are still developing, so they are able to keep their good oral health into the future.

Fluoride Varnish for Young Children

With younger children, we typically use fluoride varnish, which we feel is a safe, efficient and easy to apply on the teeth. The varnish is painted on the teeth with a small brush. When the varnish meets saliva, the varnish hardens fast. The fluoride varnish forms a barrier coat on the teeth and lasts until it wears off naturally, or brushed off later that evening.

Fluoride varnish is particularly useful for younger children because it is easy to apply, and the composition does not require the child to sit for long periods of time, and releases a prolonged and considerable dose of fluoride to help protect your child’s developing teeth.

Foam Fluoride for Older Children

If your recommendation is for fluoride for an older child, we will likely recommend fluoride in foam form. Since there are multiple ways to deliver fluoride – usually it is done with a special tray that has fluoride foam and the child bites down on it for a certain period of time. At times your child may even have a suction straw to eliminate the excess foam and saliva.

When the time is up, we take the tray off, and the patient is told not to eat or drink for at least 30 minutes to encourage the fluoride to absorb into the enamel, and provide maximum protection.

Fluoride Treatment Options for Children

Bright Smiles Dentistry & Orthodontics has various fluoride treatments depending on the child’s age and oral health situation. During your child’s appointment, we will help you determine the correct fluoride treatment based on your child’s developmental stage.

When Does Your Child Receive Fluoride Treatments?

Let take a look at your little teeth!
Fluoride treatments are generally performed during your child’s routine dental checkups, which are every 6 months. Fluoride treatment may be performed more or less frequently than this recommend treatment in children who may have increased risk for cavities.

Several risk factors that may increase your child’s risk for cavities include:

A history of cavities/early childhood caries

Poor oral hygiene habits

A diet high in sugar

Lack of access to fluoridated drinking water

Dry mouth or certain medical conditions

At your child’s check up, our dental team will be monitoring their dental health and recommend a unique frequency of fluoride treatments based on your child’s individual needs to help keep their teeth strong and healthy.

Are Fluoride Treatments Safe?

In short yes, fluoride treatments are safe and an extremely effective way to prevent tooth decay in children. The fluoride we uses has a controlled amount in a professional treatment, we are able to finish up quickly and with discomfort to the child if possible! We always try to do whatever possible to make your child comfortable while performing a fluoride treatment, while acknowledging many children can be apprehensive as it is a new experience.

It is also important to note that fluoride treatments from a dentist are much higher doses than the fluoride contained in toothpaste, or drinking water, which is why cavity prevention is successful when a dentist applies fluoride as well!
