CAD/CAM Technology at Bright Smiles Dentistry & Orthodontics

At Bright Smiles Dentistry & Orthodontics we are always striving to remain up to date and use the newest technologies to give our patients the best service possible. CAD/CAM technology has been one of the biggest advances in modern dentistry. Through CAD/CAM technology we can design and create beautiful high-quality dental restorations both accurately and quickly. Whether it is a crown, veneer, or bridge, CAD/CAM technology provides the opportunity for a accurately fitted, custom restoration of your smile; and often within one appointment.
CAD/CAM stands for Computer Assisted Drawing/Computer Assisted Manufacturing. CAD/CAM technology integrates digital design and precise cutting to manufacture individualized dental restorations. In the past, dental restorations, such as crowns or bridges, took two or more appointments and lots of lab time. CAD/CAM technology gives the patient a much more direct experience with the dentist and allows the process to be streamlined with fantastic results.

CAD: Computer-Aided Design

Using specialized software, we created a complete, three-dimensional model of your restoration. This is done with the use of digital impressions taken using an intraoral scanner. The intraoral scanner replaces the use of the old-fashioned method of taking a mold with goop impression material and allows the impressions to be standardized and more comfortable for the patient.

CAM: Computer-Aided Manufacturing

When the design is finalized, we send the digital model to the milling unit that mills your restoration from a solid block of material, generally ceramic or porcelain. This is how you get a restoration that fits well, looks great, and is durable.

Advantages of CAD/CAM Technology

CAD/CAM technology provides a multitude of advantages for both patients and dental professionals, including:

Accuracy:

The digital design process ensures your restorations are made with complete accuracy. This means more natural contours and better fit, enhanced function and less need for adjustments. All of these features mean longer lasting success.

Metal-Free Aesthetics:

Many CAD/CAM restorations can be completed with metal-free products (i.e., porcelain or ceramic). These materials look even more like natural teeth and can blend seamlessly into your smile.

Single Appointment Convenience:

Many restorations can be designed, built and placed all in one appointment! Which means there are no temporary restorations and you do not need to come back for another appointment!

Exceptional Fit and Function:

Because CAD/CAM technology allows restorations to be very closely customized, your restoration much better fitted and function more comfortably.

Durable and Last:

CAD/CAM restorations can be very strong as they are built from high-quality materials (generally strong and wear resistant), meaning they last!

Crowns:

Custom crowns designed with CAD/CAM will fit perfectly over your current tooth to protect it and restore function.

Veneers:

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that cover the front known as the facial surface of your teeth to alter the appearance of your smile. CAD/CAM technology creates veneers with phenomenal accuracy.

Inlays and Onlays:

Inlay and onlay restorations are used to restore teeth that are damaged or decayed and that require more than a filling but not a complete crown. CAD/CAM allows inlays and onlays to be created accurately to your specific tooth to fit it perfectly.

Bridges:

A bridge is created to replace one or more teeth that are missing. CAD/CAM allows your bridge to be created to fit well and look convincing.

Mouthguards:

Your custom-designed mouthguards (for sports or bruxism, nighttime grinding) use CAD/CAM technology to achieve a superior fit and protection.

Orthodontic appliances:

Some types of orthodontics, ie. clear aligners also can use CAD/CAM technology.

What is produced by CAD/CAM?

No Messy Impressions:

With the use of digital scanning technology, we can capture your teeth in 3D without the need for uncomfortable impression materials. This process is fast and convenient and a much better experience for our patients.

Predictable and Great Looking Results:

Because its so precise, you can be assured that your restoration will fit, feel good in your mouth and function like a natural tooth.
