Our team is committed to making your oral care as compassionate as possible, and with the advances in sedation, we can focus on how to make managing your oral health more comfortable.

What Is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication in pill form to help relax you before and during your dental procedure. Oral sedation is different than using nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or intravenous (IV) sedation in that it is a prescribed pill taken before the appointment. The oral sedation pill is a medication in the benzodiazepines drug family. Benzodiazepines affect the central nervous system (CNS), and in the case of utilizing oral sedation, benzodiazepines help the individual to feel an extremely relaxed state.

The patient will remain conscious during the dental procedure however the effects of the sedative to help lessen fear, anxiety, or discomfort. Oral sedation can range in doses; light to moderate, however, in all doses the patient will feel calmness, comfort, and relaxedness during the procedure while still being able to respond to the dentist’s requests.

Dental Anxiety

If you are an anxious dentist goer, oral sedation could help you stay calm and relaxed throughout your appointment.

Fear of Pain

Some patients may have a low tolerance for pain, or concern of pain during treatment. Oral sedation helps reduce their pain sensitivity to make their treatment more comfortable.

Extended Procedures (long procedures)

If we would be doing extensive dental work such as several fillings, extractions or a root canal, oral sedation allows you to be relaxed for a longer period of time and allows us to do all the work in one visit.

Sensitive Gag Reflex

Getting dental work with a sensitive gag reflex could be difficult especially with tools in the back of the mouth. Oral sedation helps to suppress the gag reflex and can help make the procedure smoother.

Difficulty Sitting Still

Some patients, especially children or who may have some medical conditions, have difficulty with sitting still during treatment. Oral sedation helps a patient relax and becomes still so the procedure can proceed smoother and more efficiently.

How Oral Sedation is Done

Oral sedation is easy at Bright Smiles Dentistry & Orthodontics.
Consultation
Before you schedule a procedure with oral sedation, you will first need to have a consultation meeting with the dentist. We will review your medical history, medications you are currently taking, and any previous experiences you have had with anesthesia or sedation. The consultation is a necessary step to ensure that oral sedation would be both safe and appropriate for you.
Prescription
Once oral sedation has been determined to be right for you, the dentist will prescribe a sedative medication, usually a benzodiazepine such as Valium (diazepam) or Halcion (triazolam). Most patients tolerate these well, and we frequently use them for the sole purpose of reducing anxiety.
Preparation
On the day of your appointment you will be given instruction to take the prescribed pill about 30-60 minutes before your appointment. Depending on your anxiety level, you may be instructed to take a dose the night before the procedure for a better sleep and reduced anxiety levels for the morning.
You will be relaxed
By the time you arrive at the front door of our office, the oral sedative will have affected you, you will feel calm, relaxed and ready for your dental procedure. Depending on the level of sedation you will feel drowsy but will still be conscious and able to verbally communicate what you are feeling.
The appointment
Throughout your appointment, the dental staff will monitor your vital signs making sure you are safe and comfortable. You will likely feel very relaxed and may not even remember some of the appointment.
Recovery
Once the appointment is over, you may feel groggy for a couple of hours. Please arrange for someone to drive you home, the effects of the sedative can remain for a while. You should rest for the rest of the day, while the medication eventually wears off.

Is taking sedation medication appropriate for you and safe?

Oral sedation is the most researched and utilized sedation modality in dentistry, is safe for the majority of patients under the supervision of appropriately trained and licensed dentist. At Bright Smiles Dentistry & Orthodontics, we focus on the patient and take additional care to maximize safety when utilizing oral sedation.

When considering the use of oral sedation, we review relevant medical history and medications to assure that there is no contraindications or interaction before prescribing oral sedatives. If we are going to use oral sedatives, then we will modify the dosage to fit your needs so you are comfortable and calm with very limited likelihood of experiencing any side effects.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide sedation is inhaled through a mask, and constitutes mild sedation. Nitrous oxide also has a fast onset and is quickly exhaled from your body at the conclusion of your dental treatment and because of these factors, you can go back to your normal activities right away. It does not have the same sedative effect as oral sedation and is therefore not as beneficial for patients who have high-anxiety about dental visits or options that are expected to be longer than the average dental appointment.

IV Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation is given through your vein and is certainly a deeper sedation than what you can receive orally at home. IV sedation is an excellent option for someone who requires multiple pieces of dental work at once, or, have extreme fear of the dentist. However, IV sedation is more sedating and requires technology and monitoring for safety; however, it is also more invasive than oral sedation.
Oral sedation offers a happy medium of sedating options between mildly sedated nitrous and more deeply sedated IV. Oral sedation is simple to use and requires no needles or special equipment.
