Digital X-rays have become a crucial part of modern dentistry, especially in using early detection and realizability to diagnosing and treating dental concerns for children! Digital x-rays also allow us do provide less invasive treatment, and keep your child safe by ensuring they are exposed to minimal radiation.

What Are Digital X-Rays?

Digital X-Rays are an improved method of traditional dental x-rays. Instead of using film, digital x-rays use digital sensors to capture and display pictures of your child’s teeth, gums, and jaw. Digital x-rays are available right away and can be viewed on the ositioning computer screen and shared with our entire office in seconds. Our dentists can easily view details of your child’s teeth and any issues right away, allowing for clear assessment and diagnosis. The clarity in depth digital X-Rays offer is invaluable in diagnosing cavities, determining tooth development phase and planning orthodontic treatment and The benefits of digital x-rays allow us to offer our young clients, more diagnostic information and appropriate methods of treatment.

Why Are Digital X-Rays Important to Children’s Dentistry?

Digital X-Rays assist enormously in diagnosing and treating issues in children’s teeth and dental structure. Children’s teeth are still developing. Issues like cavities, misaligned teeth, or impacted teeth may not be visible during visual examinations of children’s dental condition. Digital X-Rays provides a thorough view of your child’s dental structure that we can use to plan treatments or simply catch issues early on.

Below are a few reasons digital X-Rays are so important to children:

Detection of Cavities Early:

Cavities may begin forming in the small, hard-to-reach portions of children’s teeth. With digital X-Rays, we can now see cavities when they are tiny, likely before the rest of the world is able to see them. Important to catch decay in its infancy as we are able to perform less invasive intervention, such as fluoride applications or small fillings down the road — or avoid the larger restoration all together!

Seeing Dental Development:

Digital x-rays allow for us to see the development of the permanent teeth, before they ever erupt. With this, we can see if the teeth will erupt normally, if they have calcified correctly, if there are any impactions, and if there is something abnormal in the development of the jaw. This is particularly useful in helping us prevent larger dental issues as your child grows.

Planning for Orthodontics:

If your child may need braces or orthodontic treatment in the future, digital x-rays allow us to see the relationships of the jaw teeth relation, and give us the information we need to develop an estimated plan and treatment, which will guide your child’s teeth in the optimal position that will develop that wonderful and healthy smile.

How Do Digital X-Rays Work?

Generally, the very first step in the dental process at an office will likely be digital x-ray. Digital x-rays work in a very similar way to a regular x-ray, with a few additional changes to the way in which the technology works leading up to the final image display. In place of film, a small sensor will take the placed of the photographic films to capture the x-ray image inside your child’s mouth. The sensor takes the x-ray image instead of film, but displays the image in real-time on a computer screen for our dentists to see and review right away.

Digital x-rays are extremely detailed images, and on screen, our dentists are able to zoom in on any area displayed, and improve the image. The digital x-ray technology we have in place produces a better diagnostic experience with the identification of problems that may not necessarily be visible at toilet exam; thus enabling better primacy of care for your child.

Are Digital X-Rays Safe to Use for Children?

At Bright Smiles Dentistry & Orthodontics, we always want to assure you that your child’s safety is our highest priority. Digital X-rays are safe and useful clinical tools, especially for young patients. They use far less radiation than traditional X-rays, which makes them a safer tool for consistent use. In fact, digital X-Rays are demonstrated to operate at up to 90% less radiation than conventional X-Rays.

There are steps we take to ensure your child is being exposed to as little radiation as possible when using X-rays. These steps include taking X-rays only when absolutely necessary, to ensure they are safe and effective, and placing lead aprons and collars on the child during the X-ray process.

How Often Should Your Child Have Digital X-Rays?

The frequency of digital x-rays for your child will depend on their dental situation and management factors. For most children, we will take x-rays every 6 to 12 months to examine their tooth growth and any potential problems. We may take more x-rays throughout the year depending on children’s risk to cavities and other dental issues.

We will monitor your child’s oral health and conditions and determine the times we should take x-rays when you recognize your child’s change in their check-up. It is our philosophy to provide the highest level of care and minimize your child’s exposure to x-rays.
